The Gospel of Sonship

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes – Rom 1:16

As saints of God, we all have been impacted by the transforming power of THE GOOD NEWS.   It is the glorious power unto salvation. It is the reason we are believers and disciples today.

When we were somehow confronted with what Jesus had done for us to be free from the power AND ultimate penalty of sin, that good news caused a reaction. That good news made us forsake everything that we had currently known or pursued to turn and follow him and His way of life.

I sat and pondered on this for a while. Then I thought about what we mean when say THE GOOD NEWS. I considered it thoroughly. We serve a God who is full of goodness. We cannot even fathom His goodness on every side. If this messaging is the propaganda for a GOOD GOD, certainly it is multi-dimensional–containing many messages sent to alleviate the greatest ills and concerns of mankind.

Many would cut off THE GOSPEL of JESUS CHRIST at the gospel of the salvation (because the cross itself was not the good news for those who are not yet converted). BUT, the GOSPEL of Jesus Christ includes all of the good news that Jesus came to bring. He gave us a lot of good news outside of the cross–to include:

  • The Kingdom of God Would Now Come Down to Earth.
  • He was establishing a New Covenant that we would all be empowered to keep by the Holy Spirit and no longer relying on human effort.
  • Poverty could be Overcome
  • Broken Hearts could be Healed
  • Sickness could be cured supernaturally
  • Enemies could be destroyed
  • People could be released from emotional, mental, and physical bondage.
  • We could be regenerated and not have to be stuck in the broken patterns of family pathology.
  • We could have access to supernatural abilities.
  • We all have a destiny that was designed and fought for us to reach.

There are quite a few other announcements of Good News that Jesus and His Disciples made to the public.

FOR ME…After the good news about salvation through the work of the cross, I believe that some of the best news Jesus ever said was uttered to the disciples as recorded by John.

“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you”          – John 14:18

This is one of the most important announcements ever made. Not only would we be redeemed and not have to pay the full penalty of sins; not only would we be able to serve God;  but, we also could now be restored as a family.

Everything that people dealt with between Adam and Jesus could be boiled down to the issue of orphanhood.  The people lacked identity and wanted to be like whatever they saw. The people were full of fear. They lacked stability and a sense of direction. Even when God Almighty set out to be their God and guide, they had not been able to receive him as a father in their hearts. They would always turn and follow other gods. It could not be accomplished until his spirit could fill us.

Jesus promised at his ascension to send the HOLY SPIRIT: the comforter, the helper, the spirit of truth, and THE SPIRIT OF ADOPTION. This would alleviate us all of the burden of being orphans and left uncovered in the deepest way.

In Romans 8:15-16 , Paul says it like this,

For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”  The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

I am elated that I have the opportunity to relate to God as Father. Our relationship is intimate and love-based. This is indeed Good News. I am just as excited to share it! YOU, TOO, CAN BE A SON OF GOD.
