Sonship |The Blueprint

The ultimate purpose of a person coming to be reconciled to Father God is not just redemption or salvation, but it is to be reborn and reformed into a mature son.  Another way to say that is to have Christ formed in us. Apostle Paul often said this to his disciples. (See Gal 4:19 and Col 1:27).

Even to that end, Jesus set up specialist to serve those who belong to Him long after he left the planet. Those specialist are:

  • Apostle
  • Prophet
  • Teacher
  • Pastor
  • Evangelist
He handed out gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, and pastor-teacher to train Christ’s followers in skilled servant work, working within Christ’s body, the church, until we’re all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God’s Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ. Eph 4:11-13 MSG

He set it up for these specialists to have supernatural abilities to enable them to continue the work of forming Christ in the lives of the saints. We are to be like Christ in ability, character, and commitment to calling.

Christ Formation

Christ formation happens by Him giving us access to his spiritual abilities and characteristics, while simultaneously taking on his mentality.

We get access to Christ’s abilities through spiritual gifts given to us through the indwelling of His Holy Spirit. There are various kinds of abilities and he predetermined who would have need of which and when they would come alive to them. (See Romans 12, Corinthians 12, & Ephesians 4)

We get access to Christ character  through His spirit that comes to dwell within us when we are reborn. We call this fruit of the Spirit(See Galatians 5:22) The fruit of the spirit is matured as we grow in Christ-like character and move further away from our carnal nature.

We grow to be like him so that we can live like him– as mature sons. This brings me to the commitment to calling. This is the part where take on His mentality.  All of these things are a part of having Christ formed in us. Jesus was fervently committed to being a great SON.  Jesus even told his disciples:

So Jesus explained himself at length. “I’m telling you this straight. The Son can’t independently do a thing, only what he sees the Father doing. What the Father does, the Son does. The Father loves the Son and includes him in everything he is doing. John 5:19-20 MSG

The Purpose of a Blueprint

We take our cue from Jesus- the perfect model of Sonship. JESUS is the blueprint for us who now set out to live as sons of God. A blueprint is a guide for making something work. It is a design or pattern that can be followed to achieve an expected outcome. JESUS is the perfect blueprint for us who are becoming mature sons.

So much of Jesus’ life can be carved out and chopped up to give us lessons in sonship. I would like to point out, what I believe to be the zenith of our aspirations as it pertains to being like Jesus.  It was captured in a prayer prayed by Jesus.

I glorified you on earth by completing down to the last detail
What you assigned me to do. And now, Father, glorify me with your very own splendor, the very splendor I had in your presence
Before there was a world. I spelled out your character in detail
To the men and women you gave me. They were yours in the first place; Then you gave them to me, and they have now done what you said.
They know now, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that everything you gave me is firsthand from you, for the message you gave me, I gave them; And they took it, and were convinced that I came from you. They believed that you sent me. John 17:4-8 MSG

The Height of Sonship  included these things:

  • Glorifying God by Completing our Detailed Assignments
  • Exemplifying the Character of the Father  in detail to the people he calls us to serve
  • Giving everything that the Father gives you to pour into this world
  • Fully understanding that everything glorious about sons is the father’s
  • Being fully resorted to the height of Glory in communion and fellowship with the Father.

As we take on a role as sons, Let us look to the life and model of Jesus. Let us live to culminate our lives with this same prayer. #RevealingSons
